Latoya Cunningham from the NFL Alumni DET Chapter invited me to the Detroit Public School League football awards this past Thursday.
To my left is Brenda Gatlin. In October of this year, Mrs. Gatlin was honored with a plaque at Corner Ballpark for giving over 40 years of her life to the youth of Detroit through coaching and teaching in Detroit Public Schools. The NFL Alumni decided to award her with the Service Award of the year and I was able to take a picture with her. Greatness.
Along with Gaitlin, several DPSL Football student-athletes were honored for their academic and athletic performances for the 2019-20 school year. I was able to interview both Bryce Gates (Detroit Western HS) and Kobe King (Cass Tech HS) at the end of the event. Both of these young men spoke confidently, expressing their interest for athletics and academics at the post-secondary educational levels.
The NFL Alumni Detroit Chapter wants to continue to shine a light on student-athletes at the interscholastic level. They build the morale of the youth through charity events and outreach. Clearly the DPSL awards echo's their operational efforts and initiatives. More pictures with the nights stars are embedded below.
Detroit Lions WR Kennedy Golladay stopped by for a few and gave some words of encouragement. I wasn't able to catch Golladay for an interview before his departure but I was able to interview both Kobe King and Bryce Gates before leaving. Their interviews are featured in the video below.
